Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock é um jogo eletrônico musical desenvolvido pela Neversoft e distribuído pela Activision e RedOctane. Ele é o terceiro título concreto da série Guitar Hero, e o quarto título em geral. Guitar Hero III foi primeiramente lançado para PlayStation 2 e Xbox 360, com a versão para PlayStation 2 desenvolvida pela Budcat Creations, a versão para Wii pela Vicarious Visions e a versão para PC pela Aspyr.

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock possui 73 músicas na mídia do jogo; inclui 39 músicas do modo single-player, três músicas da "Boss Battles", seis músicas exclusivas do modo Co-op e 25 músicas bônus. As versões para Xbox 360 e PlayStation 3 disponibilizam ao jogador novas músicas que podem ser baixadas para o jogo. Em 12 de setembro de 2008, existiam 59 músicas disponíveis para download para ambas as plataformas, elevando o número de músicas selecionáveis para tais versões a 132. • Não é necessario vencer os Guitar-Battles para prosseguir no jogo. Existe um modo de passar por elas sem vencer, exceto contra Lou.
• A versão da música "The Devil Went Down to Georgia / Lou Guittar Battle" é uma regravação em forma de heavy metal feita por Steve Ouimette de uma música country do grupo "The Charlie Daniels Band".
• "Through the Fire and Flames" é considerada a música mais difícil (com exatas 3722 notas) de todas as 6 edições do jogo. É uma música extra liberada após a finalização do jogo, logo, não é necessário vencê-la.
• Nos consoles Xbox 360 e PlayStation 3, existe a opção de fazer o download de algumas músicas, contidas em "Packs" (pacotes de músicas), lançados pelos produtores do jogo.
• Vencendo as batalhas contra algum guitarrista, indo à loja do jogo, o jogador é capaz de comprá-lo para jogar com o mesmo.
• Na versão de PlayStation 2 e de Wii estão presentes os personagens Metalhead e Elroy, enquanto que em outros consoles eles são substituídos por God Of Rock e Grim Reaper.

• Na cena antes do "Guitar Battle Vs. Slash", um membro da audiência pode ser ouvido gritando "OH MY GOD, IT'S SLASH!" (em português: MEU DEUS! É O SLASH!) quando Slash entra no palco.
• O grande sinal brilhante do lado esquerdo da tela em Kaiju Megadome um provérbio japonês (lembrando que Kaiju Megadome fica no Japão) que diz algo ao longo das linhas de "Cair sete vezes, levantar-se oito.". Por coincidência, Kaiju Megadome é a fase 7 de todas as 8 fases.
• Na tela de carregamento da versão para PS2, pode-se um braço segurando uma guitarra, se você olhar para o antebraço do rapaz, há dois números tatuado: 3 e 7, uma referência à canção "3's & 7's", que aparece no jogo.
• O nome da seção para o solo da música Paranoid do Black Sabbath é chamado de "Solo Bloody Solo". Esta é uma referência ao álbum Black Sabbath e música "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath".
• A parte de trás da guitarra "Moon Shot" (que é apenas conseguida após zerar o jogo no Fácil) tem um adesivo preto onde se lê "DARK SIDE". Esta é uma possível referência ao álbum clássico do Pink Floyd, "Dark Side of the Moon".
• Na cena final, você é visto fugindo do Lou's Inferno em uma motocicleta, fazendo referência a capa de "Back Out of Hell".
• A roupa alternativa para Axel Steel tem ele com um chapéu de caminhoneiro, colete preto, shorts e camuflagem, juntamente com uma barba vermelha. A imagem é a intenção de representar Dimebag Darrell, ex-guitarrista do Pantera.
• Quando você jogar Through the Fire and Flames no Expert, a tela de carregamento, simplesmente diz: "Boa sorte"(originalmente, "Good Luck"). Isso só acontece nas versões para Wii e para PlayStation 2 do jogo.
• No cartaz do "Desert Rock Tour" há um letreiro com uma seta apontando para a direita dizendo "Lou's Inferno". Lou's Inferno é o Lugar final. Há boatos de que é possível existir um "atalho" para Lou's Inferno, mas isso é apenas bobagem
• No palco do "Studio 999", há um cartaz que se pareçe com o logotipo da Neversoft, os desenvolvedores de Guitar Hero III.
