Esta é uma lista das cidades mais populosas do mundo, definida de acordo com o conceito de cidade propriamente dito. A lista classifica unidades municipais urbanas do mundo (ou os agrupamentos estatísticos dessas unidades), de acordo com a população. Note-se que as populações listadas são para a cidade propriamente dita e não para a zona urbana nem sua área metropolitana.

O significado e o papel das unidades políticas tomadas nesta lista como "cidade própria" não são e não podem ser inteiramente consistentes, devido aos diferentes sistemas de governo locais em todo o mundo. Definições estatísticas para cada cidade, área de superfície aproximada e a densidade populacional são também indicados.
