Oh! Susanna

"Oh! Susanna" é uma canção escrita por Stephen Foster em 1847. Associada popularmente com a Corrida do Ouro da Califórnia, é provavelmente baseda numa canção de marcha escocesa, visto que a melodia pode ser interpretada em gaita-de-foles. A letra inclui bons exemplos de versos sem sentido:

Oh I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee,

I'm going to Louisiana, my true love for to see

It rained all night the day I left, the weather it was dry

The sun so hot I froze to death; Susanna, don't you cry.

Oh, Susanna, don't you cry for me

For I come from Alabama,

With my banjo on my knee.

I had a dream the other night when everything was still,

I thought I saw Susanna coming up the hill,

The buckwheat cake was in her mouth, the tear was in her eye,

I said I'm coming from Dixieland, Susanna don't you cry.

I soon will be in New Orleans

A canção foi escrita originalmente numa grosseira imitação de dialeto afro-americano ("I'se gwine to Lou'siana my true lub for to see"), refletindo a tradição de minstrel show no qual Foster trabalhou. A versão de Foster incluía uma estrofe que raramente é cantada hoje em dia por conta de seu conteúdo "violentamente racista":

I jump'd aboard the telegraph and trabbled down de ribber,

De lectrick fluid magnified, and kill'd five hundred Nigga.
