Rachel Carson
Rachel Louise Carson (27 de Maio, 1907 – 14 de Abril, 1964) foi uma zoóloga, bióloga e escritora americana, cujo trabalho principal, Silent Spring, é geralmente reconhecido como o principal impulsionador do movimento global sobre o Ambiente.

Rachel Carson começou a sua carreira como bióloga nos Estados Unidos, no U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, e em 1950 tornou-se escritora da natureza. Em 1951 escreveu e publicou o seu primeiro livro, o best-seller The Sea Around Us. Este livro garantiu-lhe estabilidade económica e deu-lhe notoriedade como escritora. Depois seguiu-se The Edge of the Sea, também um best-seller. Carson republicou o seu primeiro livro, sob o nome Under the Sea-Wind.
No final dos anos 1950s, Carson virou sua atenção para conservação e para os problemas ambientais causados pelos pesticidas sintéticos. O resultado foi Silent Spring (1962), que trouxe preocupações ambientais sem precedentes para uma parcela da opinião pública americana. Silent Spring impulsionou uma inversão na política nacional pesticida levando a uma proibição nacional sobre DDT e outros pesticidas. Esta com os seus movimentos ambientalistas que inspirou levou a criação da Environmental Protection Agency foi lhe oferecida a Medalha Presidencial da Liberdade.
