Autor quase desconhecido do grande público, que não seja familiarizado com a literatura de matiz conservadora e católica, Thornton não mereceu sequer um verbete específico na Catholic Encyclopedia (New Advent), mas é autor que prestou um enorme trabalho ao cânone da tradição da literatura dita "católica". O próprio Autor de "Return to Tradition" (1948) diz que "num certo sentido o termo "Literatura Católica" parece muito próximo de inexpressivo". É que para uma grande grupo de pessoas, dentro ou fora das fronteiras da Igreja Católica, o termo transformou-se numa espécie de dogmatismo, visto contra um pano-de-fundo de pietismo e apologética.
