After theskiagraphs were made and the diagnosis changed to infectious ar-thritis, the patient promptly responded to treatment and rapidlyrecovered. Tubercular arthritis, in its early stage, is very difficult, if notimpossible, to distinguish in the skiagraph from other joint affec-tions. When bony substance becomes involved, the skiagraph willshow the change in texture and reveal the true condition of affairs. Loose bodies in the joints, sometimes called floating cartilage, arefrequently difficult to detect because of their transparency. Wheresuch bodies are suspected, exposures should be made from severalangles, with the hope of getting the object in a position not coveredby the bones.
