Sir Henry Rider Haggard KBE (Bradenham, 22 de junho de 1856 – Marylebone em 14 de maio de 1925) foi um escritor britânico, que escreveu obras como As Minas do Rei Salomão, entre outras, geralmente protagonizadas por exploradores ingleses que viajavam para a África.
Carreira
[editar | editar código]Haggard nasceu no interior da Inglaterra em 22 de junho de 1856. Era filho de filho de William Meybohm Rider Haggard e Ella Doveton. Estudou na Ipswich Grammar School. Aos dezenove anos, foi para o sul da África como secretário do governador da colônia de Natal (atual África do Sul). Quando o Transvaal foi anexado à Grã-Bretanha em 1877, seguiu para lá como comissário especial, a serviço do administrador colonial Theophilus Shepstone. Voltou à Inglaterra em 1879, e em 1880 casou-se com Mariana Margitson.[1]
A partir de 1882 começou a escrever romances e, em 1885 lançou com sucesso As Minas do Rei Salomão, assegurando sua independência financeira. Ao longo de sua trajetória, consolidou-se como uma das principais referências no gênero do romance aventuresco. Muitos de seus romances, ambientados no continente africano, contribuíram para a legitimação pública do colonialismo ao idealizar a África como um continente exótico e repleto de oportunidades de exploração para europeus[2]. Foi agraciado em 1919 com o título de Sir, por seus feitos brilhantes.[1]
Como funcionário colonial no sul da África, Rider Haggard pôde conhecer vários países e uma enorme quantidade de costumes, crendices e lendas que influenciaram fundamentalmente seu gênio literário.[1] Em especial, Haggard desenvolveu um profundo interesse pelas histórias do Reino Zulu, que utilizou como base para a construção de vários dos seus romances, a exemplo de Nada the Lily (1892)[3].
Além de administrador colonial, foi também agricultor.[1]
