The Associação Cultural e Museu Cavaquinho (Museum of Cavaquinho) is a non-profit association created with the aim of documenting, preserving and promoting the history of Cavaquinho.

History[editar | editar código-fonte]

The Associação Cultural Museu Cavaquinho was established on July 2013 with the aim of covering the needs and flaws that were revealed during a primary study on the history of the Cavaquinho in Portugal, developed by Júlio Pereira (founding associate and current President). Since the production of his famous album "Cavaquinho" in the early 80's, the practice of the cavaquinho didn't stopped, on the contrary, it kept moving. However, it is hard to find any documentation on such subject, or even a learning method or conservation plan of the practice of the instrument or of its making techniques. From the very beginning, Museu Cavaquinho realized the urgency of gathering all the information concerning cavaquinho: not only professional musicians, players, instrument-makers and lecturers but also researchers, universities and several other entities that build the foundation for what was, and could be, the history and journey of the cavaquinho. This association was then established in order to converge all this disconnected knowledge towards the documentation, preservation and promotion of the history of the cavaquinho.

Goals[editar | editar código-fonte]

The main goals of Museu Cavaquinho are:

  • Collecting all sorts of documentation, publications, stories, scores, iconography and media material.
  • Cataloguing Portuguese instrument-makers (Continent and Island of Madeira) of cavaquinho and braguinha.
  • Cataloguing the musicians, groups, orchestras and associations connected to this instrument.
  • Constructing a documentary archive for study, with a view to the Cavaquinho being taught in schools
  • Creating protocols with the scientific community (in the areas of Ethnomusicology, Anthropology, Sociology and Psychology) in terms of their own contribution to the aforementioned objectives
  • Creating a website and social network extending around the world, linking all the communities and Associations involved with the Portuguese Cavaquinho and Braguinha, the Cape-Verdian Cavaquinho, the Brazilian Cavaquinho, the Hawaian and Continental North American Ukulele, and the Indonesian Keroncong, with the aim of showing the world the Cavaquinho from which they descend.
  • Promoting the subscription of the knowledge and techniques related to the manufacture of the cavaquinho in the National Cultural Heritage Inventory as a fundamental measure for its safeguarding and valuation at a national level.
  • Promoting all necessary steps to be taken for UNESCO recognition of the Cavaquinho Practice as "Intangible Cultural Heritage".

Museum[editar | editar código-fonte]

Museu Cavaquinho doesn't have yet a place of its own. Currently, the association shares all of its work on its official website.
