Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Swe97 (talk | contribs) at 13:48, 19 July 2019 (→‎Gab10 → Swe10). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Changing username/Simple
This page is a forum in which users can request, and global renamers (including stewards) can consider and carry out, requests to rename accounts to usernames that are not yet taken on any Wikimedia project. While global renamers carry out renames, other users (including bots) help by "clerking" the mechanics of this process. If you wish to help as a clerk, please read the linked page carefully.

Instructions
For help 'vanishing' from Wikipedia,
please see courtesy vanishing.

Once you have decided on the name you would like:

  1. Read this page first. You must be aware of, and understand, all of that information before requesting a username change
  2. Check to make sure this username is not already in use. Do this by searching for the name here. If the name appears in the results, even if on another Wikimedia project, it is taken.
  3. Do not create an account under the new name or move/redirect your userpages. We'll do that for you.
  4. Log in with your present username in order to place your request. Renames will not be approved if the requester is not logged in.
  5. Click here to place your request.
    • Add your desired username after NEW=
    • Add a reason for the change after REASON=
    • Do not change anything after CURRENT=
  6. Make sure that you have spelt your desired name correctly, including capitalization and spacing. Save the page. If your request is submitted malformed, please remedy it according to this page.
  7. Check back on this page periodically to answer any questions that may arise regarding your request. Please be patient. It may take a few days for your request to be completed. If you do not answer any questions, your request may be declined due to no response.
  8. Once your request has been completed, please do not remove or change your request. It will be archived automatically by a bot.
  • Requests that do not adhere to these instructions or that are grossly malformed are subject to removal.

Important Notes After you are renamed...
  • Due to technical limitations, usernames may not start with a lowercase letter. However, you may use the template {{lowercase title}} on your user and user talk pages, and change your signature to reflect your preference.
  • Underscores and spaces are considered identical by the MediaWiki software.
  • Use of a company, organization, group, website, or product name as a username is prohibited by the username policy.
  • Please understand the implications of using your real name before requesting a name change to it.
  • ... your name will be changed to the new one in the page history of every page you've edited.
  • ... your userpage and any subpages will be moved to the new name automatically. Please do not attempt to move them yourself.
  • ... links left by your previous signatures will still point to the old userpage; however, a redirect will be left behind to your new userpage.
  • ... your request will be automatically moved to the archives in the interest of transparency.

On hold Looking at your block log on ptwiki, there's a possibility you may not be eligible for a courtesy vanishing. Pending input from someone who can speak the language and interpret what happened. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 23:03, 22 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Clerk note: As your request appears to be related to a desire for anonymity/privacy, please note that a permanent log record will be created noting your previous name. As such, you might consider simply creating a new account and having your current account renamed to something random and abandoning it. Please advise. A H M Mubashshir → Mubashshir

Robot clerk note: There is already a global account registered for Mubashshir.—cyberbot ITalk to my owner:Online 02:10, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Clerk note: The requested username is already registered; see Special:CentralAuth. However, as this requested account has made no edits, it meets the criteria for being usurped; if you are an established user and wish to usurp it, please read and follow the process at m:Steward requests/Username changes. If you do not wish to usurp the username, please choose another name to be renamed to. While you aren't eligible for usurpation now, you may request usurpation once you become a more established user. Aspening (talk) 13:39, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Renamer note: Usernames that are simply names of companies or groups are not permitted. However, usernames are acceptable if they contain a company or group name but are clearly intended to denote an individual person, such as "Mark at WidgetsUSA", "Jack Smith at the XY Foundation", "WidgetFan87", etc. Please choose another one. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 16:27, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Reason: As a long-retired user, I am vanishing from Wikipedia because I do not have interest in editing here anymore. I am vanishing because I feel that Wikipedia's rules are too strict to actually enjoy being here, and many users here are also snobbish and arrogant. Here's some examples of incidents that brought me to this point. Back in 2014 I've received repeated complaints about my signature and user/talk page layouts (I was younger, more hormonal and cringier back then though), and this proves Wikipedia's low tolerance for fun and creativity. Just the thought of becoming active again would depress me because of that point. More recently after I've retired this account, I occasionally edited under IP addresses (66.214.121.92 and various IPv6 addresses), where I worked to improve the climate sections for Hesperia, California and Victorville, California. On edits like this back in 2017, I worked to expand the information and added sources, but Magnolia677 and FlightTime erased it all and harassed me for claiming my edits were "spam" and "unsourced info," even though I tried to add as much sources as I could to support my claims. I remember Magnolia also reported me to WP:AIV, threatening to get me blocked just because I was trying to improve the article. Because this incident really hurt me (I've never had my edits criticized like that before), I've wanted to completely vanish from Wikipedia ever since, and now I'm here. I don't think I'm even going to edit unregistered anymore. This is the first and most recent of 3 of my accounts (see below for the other two). However, for archival purposes (so I can look back in page histories for nostalgia), I request that the user page and subpages for this account are only blanked, not deleted. The strings for my vanished user names are random, from here. If the strings are too long just shorten them to the limit. StevenD99 05:36, 19 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Reason: This was my first account and it was back when I was an undercover child/preteen. I never revealed my age until I joined under my new account above. Today was actually the decade anniversary since I first joined (July 18, 2009), which motivated me to come here to end what I would call the "decade of Wikipedia." The reasons for ending it and vanishing are already outlined above. However, because of how young I was back then, I wouldn't mind if the user page and subpages of this account are deleted (I saved the source codes of those pages on a drive so I can still look back for nostalgia). However, please MOVE all individual userboxes located here to the Template namespace (except the 2012 userbox, I think that can be deleted). I believe I joined Wikipedia only because it was the only popular site I knew that did not have an age restriction on the sign-up page, so I did not have to lie about my age (unlike other social media sites). To hide my age and immaturity even more, I tried to use big words while here and tried to act as mature and constructively as possible, although I knew of a few users who still sensed some immaturity (most notably, blurpeace in an editor review, and possibly some others).
