And they threw Daniel into the lionsden. But the king stood above and cheered Daniel, saying,Your God that you serve always will save you. That night the king could not sleep. He could not evenlisten to music. Early in the morning he went to the den. I wonder if the lions have eaten him up, the kingthought. And he cried to Daniel in a sad voice, Has your God beenable to save you ? And Daniel answered, My God sent Hisangel. He shut the lions mouths. They have not hurt me. The king was glad. He told his servants to take Danielout of the den. He now ordered Daniels enemies throwninto the den. Hardly had they reached the bottom when thehungry lions leaped upon them and broke all their bones topieces. Once more the king commanded all to pray to DanielsGod. For, said the king, He is the living God. Dan. 6.

BIBLE PRIMER 107 51. MORDECAI HONORED. There was once a king in Persia called Ahasuerus. He took a beautiful Jewish orphan girl, Esther, for hiswife. She had been brought up by an older cousin, namedMordecai. Queen Esther loved her people, the Jews, also called thepeople of Israel. When some of the Jews went back toJerusalem, many stayed in Babylon and Persia. Once Mordecai saved the kings life. Among the kings great men was one called Haman. Hewas proud. All had to bow to him. But Mordecai wouldnot do so. He knew Haman was not a good man. WhenHaman saw that Mordecai did not bow to him, he grewangry. He sent word that all Jews should be killed. Thinkof it! One night the king could not sleep. He read in the booksthat told of happenings in his kingdom. Then he read of theman that had saved his life. Oh, thought the king, and Igave him no reward! He asked Haman, What shall be done to a man whom theking wants to honor? Haman thought he meant him. Sohe told the king to give him costly clot
