É cantada pelo protagonista principal, um jóquei patriótico americano chamado Johnny Jones, que vai à Inglaterra para disputar o Derby inglês.

A canção foi criada no palco por George M. Cohan, que desempenhou o papel de Johnny Jones na produção original da Broadway que estreou em 4 de novembro de 1904. Em 2 de dezembro, Billy Murray gravou a canção para o Victor Talking Machine Company.

A música foi interpretada por James Cagney no filme Yanke Doodle Dandy, no qual ele interpretou Cohan.
