The sociology of the family examines the family as an institution and a unit of socialization. This unit of socialization is identified through various sociological perspectives; particularly with regards to the relationship between the nuclear family and industrial capitalism, and the different gender roles and concepts of childhood which arose with it. Family is said to be an essential for a healthy mind.

A sociologia da família examina a família como uma instituição e unidade de socialização. Esta unidade de socialização é identificada através de várias perspetivas sociológicas; particularmente no que diz respeito às relações entre a família nuclear e o capitalismo industrial, e os diferentes papéis sociais de gênero e conceitos de infância que com ela surgiram. A família é considerada essencial para uma mente saudável.
