Portuguese mathematic separation signs…[editar código-fonte]

Hello, Paracel63! I first of all thank you for your message, because my revision was incorrect. (In fact, I must confess that I think my revision was accidental, for I don't remember having analyzed your correction.) I have already revised the article to use the correct convention for numbers.

In Brazil, we use the opposite convention of that of the USA (I don't know how it is in Sweden): comma for decimal separation, and point for thousands. However, since Wikipédia is used by several Portughese-speaking countries, another convention was established for thousands separator, which is the space. This is not common in Brazil, and I myself don't like it, but that's the rule. One exception is for years, that use no separator.

Anything different from this rule is an error, and there must be thousands of wrong articles in Portughese Wikipédia, because not many people are really concerned about following the rules. In the article you mentioned (that about Brazil), for instance, the populational density has a point, instead of a comma. I will make the correction as well.

@Claudio M Souza: Hi! Many thanks for your understanding of mathematical systems. The English standard for decimal sign (point) is not used in many other languages. But it has taken hold in Eastern Asia and is also common in Mexico/Central America. I believe this map shows the accurate distribution of the two standards (point or comma). Thousands separator is a somewhat more complex thing, with at least four variants:

1,000 (English-speaking countries and probably Eastern Asia/Mexico/Central America)
1.000 (Continental Europe etc)
1 000 (Sweden, Portuguese, more?)
1000 (years, in most languages)
It's a bit troublesome that ptwp have adopted templates from enwp without localising them into Portuguese standards. But in this case {{Fmtn}} is prepared to use Portuguese standards (I've updated the article using the correct input).
