Olá,

Would you like to consider Wikipedia in Portuguese to adjust the interface to readers' and contributors' needs?

What is our purpose?

10 years after the deployment of the currently default skin (called Vector) some changes need to be made. Readers, newbies, and experienced users agree that the interface could be easier and quicker to use, more welcoming, and more intuitive. That's why volunteers have written gadgets and scripts, and deployed them on individual wikis. Now, our intention is to make these improvements deployed on more wikis, and by default. Wikipedia in Portuguese may be among early adopter wikis and shape the improvements at the early stage. Wikiversity in Portuguese is already on the list.

How would the change work?

  • If you agreed, all new features would be visible by default both for logged-in and logged-out.
  • The changes will be made in small steps (as far from "everything at once" as possible). Each of them will be discussed, developed, and deployed separately.
  • These are changes for Vector only (it's the default skin), which means that all users of Monobook or other skins will not see the difference.
  • Those who prefer to keep the current Vector view will be able to do so - our refined interface will be Vector, and the unchanged Vector will be called Legacy Vector.
  • We will not change the article content (as marked on the graphic to the right), and we will not remove any functionality (our plan is to rearrange and improve them).

What changes are we going to introduce?

These are all early concepts and we need your feedback to make them better. Among our first improvements, there are going to be:

  • a smaller header. This will allow us to later make the header sticky and visible all the time (without needing to scroll up),
  • a collapsible sidebar. It will make it easier not to get distracted when reading,
  • a limited width for articles. This allow users to read more quickly and lead to better retention of the text itself. (This functionality may not affect all Special pages).

You can learn more about the potential future changes on MediaWiki.

How can you participate?

  • [The community] Do you agree to have our changes deployed this month?
  • [Any individual] Share your feedback! What do you like? What would you like to see changed? Some preferences are known already, since our changes are based on data: research (report) and community feedback (report). But there's still a lot of details to refine!
  • [Tech-oriented] Follow our messages about gadgets and scripts which would need to be updated to maintain compatibility.

The project I've just introduced is called Desktop Improvements, it's developed by the WMF Web team, and my name is Szymon. If you are interested, or if you have further questions, ask right below my message, or write on my talk page, or send me an e-mail.

Obrigado!
