Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: varies by subspecies; Height: varies by subspecies; Weight: varies by subspecies; Identification: The red deer is red to grayish-brown in color, and its winter coat is darker. This deer also has a yellow rump patch and often has a dark caudal stripe on the rump. Only males have antlers; Habitat: Woodlands; Diet: Herbivore: grass, shoots, twigs, leaves, flowers, fruit; Reproduction: Gestation lasts 230-240 days, after which one or two offspring are born. The fawns are weaned at seven months of age; Social Structure: Sexes remain separate except during the rut; Behavior: Communication consists primarily of smell and vocal cues; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: Red deer are commonly farmed for their meat and to help build wild populations. |
