There are a considerable number of higher education institutions named European University (or similar) along Europe, particularly in the European Union (EU), and also another entities with the same denomination. Below is presented an elucidation about it and a table of all the European University institutions in the EU to help creating a related framework.

European University - institutions of higher education in European Union[editar | editar código-fonte]

An European University is an institution of higher education that, with that designation, highlight identity and values of the Old Continent.

Can also work as an adjective to differentiate from other universities of the same city.

(traditionally most of the world universities use the name of the town where they are located[1] as for example University of Cambridge, UK – a few use the name of relevant persons such as Harvard University that is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA)

Symbolic representation of the tissue of European University institutions across the continent.

Across the European continent, from the Ural Mountains in Russia to the Atlantic Ocean in front of Portugal, and also in a few other zones of the planet, there are several European University (own name) located in several countries and cities. The number of European University’s campuses in European Union (EU) is above the number of the EU’s states although not all have those institutions of higher education. And some are of universal knowledge and other more specialized. And also some have more prestige than others.

Besides that there are also other entities using the name European University/ies.

Classification[editar | editar código-fonte]

When mentioning European universities, we may be talking about:

i) Any university or higher education institution, public or private, of European origin and normally located on the European continent and subject, or not, to representative associations;

ii) Several universities with different names located, basically, in different areas of the European Union that are grouped in a synergistic alliance called European University but maintaining the identity of each institution;

iii) Independent higher education institutions normally located in one or more cities in Europe and with the designation of European University.

Description of the types[editar | editar código-fonte]

i) Universities in Europe, whatever its names, can be represented by supranational organizations.

One of the most important is the EUA European University Association. Says that represents more than eight hundred universities and seventeen million students. EUA’s mission is to promote the development of a coherent system of education and research at the European level through studies, projects and services.

There's also another EUA which in this case means European University Alliance. Aims to support the internationalisation of European Higher Education. Policy changes, student mobility and institutions cooperation are part of their purposes.

The EUF European University Foundation, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, is composed by public universities that aims to accelerate the modernisation of the European Higher Education Area. European policy making, promoting high quality student mobility and a strong European higher education are part of its mission.

The EucA European university college Association wants to bring together and represent University Colleges and network of Colleges in Europe. Exchange experiences and best practices, facilitating the students with new international opportunities are part of its aim.

Should also be mentioned the SGroup European Universities' Network http://sgroup.be/, The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities  https://www.the-guild.eu/, the LERU League of European Research Universities https://www.leru.org/, the UNICA Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe http://www.unica-network.eu/ and EUSA the European University Sports Association promoting university sport, such as championships, along Europe.

ii) There are entities called European University with courses available although per se it isn’t a physical university. It is associations of universities with different names and from several locations in Europe forming the figure European University. Usually the admission is through one of those individual institutions of higher education.

They intent to promote European higher education, student mobility between universities of the same organization (different experiences) and joint degrees.

There are entities like the European University Consortium (see similar ones such as ECIU and EEUA) whose initiatives were born from those institutions of higher education. And other entities like Una Europa or the EUt+ European University of Technology that have originally emerged from an European Union’s initiative «consisting in bottom-up networks of universities across the EU which will enable students to obtain a degree by combining studies in several EU countries and contribute to the international competitiveness of European universities».

iii) Entities named European University (or similar) are independent institutions of higher education usually situated in Europe with campuses in one or more cities.

The name refers to a geography of the planet with the most advanced societies, projects a pan-European international vision and, within globalization, denotes the region where the oldest universities in the world were founded.

Some campuses in different cities of the same state, or in another one, may be under the same entity management but in general most of European University/ies (which includes the ones with some variations of the name) are of independent administration.

Notwithstanding, it can be found in the EU European Union territory (and in the remaining countries of Europe) a free reticular texture of European University institutions.

The European continent has about fifty countries and more than half composes the EU where the majority of the European University/ies are found and form an unconstrained web of higher education. This kind of academic framework can also be found in other approaches such as the American Universities, the Catholic Universities, the Technical Universities.

Outside the European Union, but still in Europe, it can be found other European Universities such as, among others, the [./Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European%20University%20at%20Saint%20Petersburg European University at Saint Petersburg] in Russia or the [./Https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European%20University%20of%20Tirana European University of Tirana] in Albania.

In the European Union can also be found other higher education instituitions with an approach to Europe in the name as for example the College of Europe.
