Joao Carlos da Silva Vieira (born July 23, 1966) is a Portuguese entrepreneur and acoustic engineer, best known as the founder and CEO of JOCAVI Acoustic Panels. Throughout his career, Vieira has made significant contributions to the field of acoustics, particularly in the development, design, and manufacturing of acoustic treatment and soundproofing materials for the Professional Audio and Construction Industry.

He pioneered the development of three-dimensional acoustic diffusers, and aptly named his creations "3D Diffusers" which became emblematic of the AS Acoustic Shells brand. His ingenuity extended to devising a unique simulation theory utilizing particle animation, enabling the visualization of the scattering diffusion coefficient of his innovative 3D acoustic diffuser designs.

His inventive spirit led him to ingeniously blend various recycled materials to accentuate the acoustic performance of his models, showcasing his commitment to sustainability alongside technical excellence.

Tuning rooms is one of his great passions, creating bass-absorbing traps that can be tuned to the resonant frequency of each room.

Early Life and Education

Vieira's journey in music and electronics began in his early years. From 1971 to 1975, he attended the Conservatório Calouste Gulbenkian in Aveiro, Portugal, where he received an introduction to music, solfege, and guitar classes. He continued his education at Escola Secundária José Estevão in Aveiro, specializing in Electronics from 1972 to 1984.

In pursuit of his passion for audio engineering, Vieira underwent training at the Institute of Audio Research in New York City from 1984 to 1986. Here, he completed courses in audio electronics, microphones, amplifiers, speakers, and live and studio mixing. Following his time in the United States, Vieira furthered his expertise with a course at CET, Centro de Estudos de Telecomunicações in Aveiro, focusing on telecommunications.

Career

Vieira's professional journey commenced in the realm of radio broadcasting, where he served as a broadcaster and host of musical programs on Rádio Independente in Aveiro from 1982 to 1983. Concurrently, he co-founded the station. During his time in the United States, Vieira worked part-time as a maintenance technician for a Portuguese radio station in Newark, NJ.

Upon returning to Portugal, Vieira embarked on a career in sound engineering and event management. From 1988 to 1993, he worked at SOS in Lisbon, a prominent company specializing in sound equipment rental and installation. During this period, Vieira served as the front of house (FOH) sound engineer for various international acts performing in Portugal.

In 1992, Vieira established JOCAVI, Painéis Acústicos Lda., a company dedicated to designing, developing, and manufacturing soundproofing materials and acoustic treatment panels. Over the years, he expanded his expertise, working as a sound engineer for renowned Portuguese bands such as Delfins, Resistência, and Pedro Abrunhosa e Bandemónio.

Additionally, Vieira played a pivotal role in the remodeling of Studios Angel1 and Angel2 for EMI - Valentim de Carvalho in 1994 and 1995, respectively. He continued to undertake soundproofing and acoustic projects for various establishments, including recording studios, television studios, auditoriums, worship rooms, churches, bars, and restaurants.

Entrepreneurship and Achievements

As an entrepreneur, Vieira's entrepreneurial ventures extended beyond JOCAVI. In 1997, he co-founded the Portuguese Professional Sound Engineers Association (ATSP), where he served as Treasurer. He also became a member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) in 1999.

Vieira's contributions to the field of acoustics are underscored by his authorship and design of trademarks, patents, and models for acoustic panels. He registered these creations internationally, ensuring their protection and commercial viability.

In 2011, Vieira authored the book "Desmistificar a Acústica" (Demystifying Acoustics), providing insights into the intricacies of acoustic engineering.

João Carlos Vieira, as CEO and founder of JOCAVI Acoustic Panels, received the “Entrepreneur of the Year” award (2017) by Litoral Magazine. This award is the recognition of his long and successful career in the music industry. This distinction coincides with the 25th anniversary of JOCAVI Acoustic Panels which will be marked by the launch of a new commemorative product line.

Later Ventures

In 2005, Vieira expanded his entrepreneurial endeavors by founding PRESTIGE, Consultadoria e Design em Acústica Lda., a consulting company specializing in soundproofing and acoustic projects. Furthermore, in 2018, he launched JOCAVI USA Corporation, extending the reach of his acoustic panel brand to the United States.
