On August 1st, 1560,the Parliament, following the popular impulse, threw off the papal yoke andestablished the reformed religion in its Presbyterian form. Queen Mary, whoreturned from France a year later, did her best to undo this work, with onlypartial success. She had him tried for treason and otherwise harassed;but in 1568 she was a prisoner, and in 1587 her death-warrant was signed byElizabeth. With Mary Stuart expired the last hope of renewed Romish suprem-acy in Britain.
