Dr. Marc van Roosmalen (Tilburgo, 24 de julho de 1947) é um primatólogo neerlandês naturalizado brasileiro. Foi eleito um dos Heróis do Planeta (inglês: Heroes of the Planet) pela revista Time em 2000.[1] Sua pesquisa resultou na identificação de diversas novas espécies de macacos, como também outros animais e plantas. Ele também é ativista na proteção da floresta brasileira.[2] Van Roosmalen recebeu o honorário neerlandês de Oficial na ordem da Arca de Ouro pelo príncipe Bernardo de Lippe-Biesterfeld em 1997.[3][4]
Controvérsias[editar | editar código-fonte]
Em 2002, ele foi multado pelo Ibama (Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais Renováveis) por acusações como transportar ilegalmente macacos e orquídeas da região Amazônica da Serra do Aracá. Em abril de 2003, van Roosmalen foi demitido do Inpa (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia) por enviar ilegalmente fezes de primata, e portanto exportando dna, para o exterior.[5]
Em 2007, ele foi preso pelo governo brasileiro por comprar e manter ilegalmente macacos órfãos em cativeiro em sua residência na Amazônia e por desviar recursos públicos.[5] Ele foi sentenciado conforme previsto em lei à pena máxima de, neste caso, 14+ anos de detenção. [6] Em agosto de 2007, ele foi solto com um habeas corpus.[7][8]
Em 2008 foi absolvido de todos os "crimes contra a Mãe Natureza" pelo STF em Brasília e desde então é residente na cidade de Manaus, AM.
Vida Pessoal[editar | editar código-fonte]
Marc cresceu em Tilburg, uma cidade no sul da Holanda. Seu pai era químico. Ele conheceu e se casou com sua primeira esposa enquanto morava em Utrecht, para onde se mudou para estudar aos 17 anos. Eles tiveram dois filhos. No início de 2008, ele se divorciou de sua primeira esposa e se casou com sua namorada brasileira.[6]
