Thornton Carle Fry
Thornton Carle Fry (Findlay, Ohio, 7 de janeiro de 1892 – 1 de janeiro de 1991) foi um matemático estadunidense, conhecido como autor de dois livros-texto amplamente utilizados, Probability and its engineering uses (1928)[1] e Elementary differential equations (1929).[2]
Thornton C. Fry obteve o bacharelado no Findlay College em 1912 e começou seus estudos de pós-graduação em matemática, física e astronomia em Wisconsin. Obteve um mestrado em 1913[3] e um Ph.D. em matemática aplicada em 1920 na Universidade do Wisconsin-Madison, orientado por Charles Sumner Slichter.[4][5] Fry trabalhou como matemático industrial na Western Electric de 1916 a 1924 e então nos Bell Telephone Laboratories (Bell Labs). Após aposentar-se nos Bell Labs, trabalhou como consultor nos Boeing Scientific Research Labs e também, durante a década de 1960, com Walter Orr Roberts, diretor do National Center for Atmospheric Research.[6]
Foi palestrante convidado do Congresso Internacional de Matemáticos em Toronto (1924).[7] Em 1982 a Mathematical Association of America (MAA) concedeu-lhe o MAA's distinguished service award.[8]
