Polygalaceae é uma família de plantas com flor (angiospérmicas) pertencente à ordem Fabales, que agrupa 21 géneros e ca. de 900 espécies validamente descritas,[2] de herbáceas, arbustos e árvores, metade das quais pertencentes ao género Polygala (o género tipo).[3] Apresenta distribuição natural por todas as regiões temperadas, tropicais e subtropicais, com excepção da Nova Zelândia.[4]
Descrição
A família Polygalaceae apresenta espécies com hábito muito diverso, desde espécies herbáceas anuais ou perenes, por vezes arbustivas ou trepadoras, a arbustos e árvores, mais raramente lianas. Algumas espécies são parasitas das raízes de outras plantas (parasitas radiculares).
São plantas de folhas com filotaxia alterna ou oposta, por vezes com as folhas basais em roseta, frequentemente verticiladas, sésseis ou pecioladas, de ordinário inteiras e pinatinérvias, sem estípulas, com ou sem folíolos. Predominam as folhas de consistência herbácea, mas muitas espécies apresentam folhagem coreácea.
As flores ocorrem em inflorescências racimosas ou espiciformes terminais ou pseudo-terminais, muito desiguais. As flores são de tamanho pequeno a médio, hermafroditas ou unisexuais, zigomorfas, com cálice de 4-5 sépalas livres ou soldados, as duas laterais petalóides e geralmente maiores que as 2-3 restantes (o que dá à flor um aspecto de "borboleta"), enquanto que a corola apresenta 3-5 pétalas livres ou soldadas na base. O androceu é de 4-8 ou de 9-10 estames soldados entre si ou soldados às pétalas, raramente livres. O gineceu é de ovário súpero, com 2-8 carpelos soldados e 1-5 lóculos, mas com um único estilo, apical, com estigma bifurcado ou bilobulado.
O fruto pode ser uma drupa, uma cápsula, um aquénio ou uma sâmara.[4] As sementes contêm óleos.
Sistemática e filogenia
A família Polygalaceae apresenta distribuição quase cosmopolita, estando ausente apenas das regiões polares, da Polinésia e da Nova Zelândia. No Velho Mundo ocorrem 400 espécies (em África cerca de 206 espécies, na Europa cerca de 32 espécies e na Ásia cerca de 70 espécies) e na Austrália ocorrem 12 espécie. No Neotropis a família está representada por 11 géneros, com mais de 470 espécies.
A família Polygalaceae foi proposta em 1809 por Johann Centurius Hoffmannsegg e Heinrich Friedrich Link na obra Flore portugaise ou description de toutes les ..., 1, p. 62. O género tipo é Polygala L.[5] São sinónimos taxonómicos para Polygalaceae Hoffmanns. & Link nom. cons. os seguintes: Diclidantheraceae J.Agardh nom. cons., Moutabeaceae Endl. e Xanthophyllaceae Gagnep. ex Reveal & Hoogland.[6]
Filogenia
A família Polygalaceae foi tratada pelos sistemas de classificação de base morfológica, entre os quais pelo sistema Cronquist, como uma ordem separada, a ordem Polygalales. No sistema de classificação APG IV, do Angiosperm Phylogeny Group, a família foi integrada em Fabales. A posição sistemática do grupo, com a presente circunscrição taxonómica, conforme determinada pelas técnicas da filogenia molecular, sugere a seguinte árvore evolucionária:[7][8][9][10][11][12][13]
