Samsung N150 é um netbook projetado para ser o mais acessível economicamente dos modelos desta empresa, sendo mais direcionado a seus consumidores.[1] Foi um dos primeiros a utilizar um processador Intel Atom N450.[4] Suas especificações revelam ser um netbook totalmente típico.[2] Tem uma qualidade de fabricação melhor que de seus concorrentes,[1] e por isto custava $350 em 22 de abril de 2010.[2]
Funciona bem para produtividade básica, streaming de mídia e aplicações de internet, checar e-mails, assistir vídeos SD[5] (vídeos codificados em Xvid são executados tranquilamente, mas qualquer coisa além de SD cobra demais do sistema)[5], processar texto[5] ou acessar redes sociais,[4] tal como seus concorrentes de baixo custo,[2] mas multitarefa é impensável[5] sem considerar o upgrade da memória de 1GB limitada pelo contrato com o Sistema Operacional[1], portanto ele é melhor em desempenhar cada tarefa de uma vez.[5] Por exemplo, é ótimo para digitar um texto no Microsoft Word enquanto se ouve alguma música no iTunes, mas tentar fazer o mesmo com algumas janelas de browser abertas gera tempo de espera considerável na transição de uma janela para outra.[2]
Usa o processador Intel Atom N450 prevalecente no mercado de netbooks, e que não tem nenhuma melhoria significativa de desempenho em relação à geração anterior de processadores Atom, já que é muito mais focado em eficiência energética.[1] Para processamento gráfico usa o típico chip gráfico integrado Intel GMA 3150[2][7] que carece de desempenho o bastante para streaming HD e qualquer tipo de jogo 3D.[1] Apenas jogos os jogos mais simples, sem gráficos complexos, conseguem ser jogados.[5] Mesmo jogos em Flash podem rodar lentamente neste netbook.[5] Ou seja, não é possível realizar codificação de vídeo ou jogar seriamente nesta máquina.[2] Seu desempenho não surpreende: alcança 37 pontos do teste World Bench 6, o que é médio para um netbook de baixo custo.[2] No PCMark05 obtém 1355 pontos e no 3DMark06 obtém 155.[4] No teste de renderização Blender 3D obtém 6 minutos e 52 segundos e no teste de codificação iTunes MP3 obtém 8 minutos e 3 segundos, que é justamente médio para um netbook.[5]
O Windows 7 Starter Edition incluído roda razoavelmente bem, mas omite o Aero Peek e não suporta monitores de dupla exibição.[2] Também, não apresenta a interface com transparência da versão Home Premium,[8] nem é possível alterar o papel de parede.[10] O netbook carece de recursos mais avançados, como uma textura anti-derrapante como a do modelo Samsung N310.[1] Sua parte traseira tem um acabamento em preto brilhante e o logo da empresa fora do centro, tornando-o visualmente agradável, apesar da necessidade de limpar constantemente marcas de dedo.[4] A tira em vermelho metalizado que circunda o netbook também é charmosa.[4] Dentro, porém, é absolutamente idêntico a milhares de netbooks, com quantidade massiva de plástico preto fosco.[4]

Sua alimentação se dá por uma bateria de seis células com total de 4400mA,[4] que apesar de menor que outros da classe liderando os netbooks tem um design mais compacto e fluido, permitindo-lhe maior finura e menor peso.[1] Com streaming de vídeo esta bateria dura 4 horas e 45 minutos, o que se supõe durar 6 horas em um uso mais típico, e que é uma quantia bem decente.[1][2] No intenso teste Battery Eater Classic, dura 5 horas e 2 minutos, o mesmo que netbooks mais antigos, porém com baterias bem maiores e pesadas.[4]
O design de seu teclado e trackpad retém muito dos designs e layouts anteriores da Samsung.[1] O layout do teclado é muito bom e o design individual das teclas é confortável[1] devido à sua pequena distância de retorno, a seu layout padrão e às lacunas cinestésicas entre os botões.[2] Apesar de que é flexível, o que faz a máquina parecer frágil,[2] e de que seria melhor com mais espaço entre as teclas[1], já que as teclas são muito pequenas e apertadas de forma que é necessário ser preciso para digitar sem erros.[4]
O trackpad é um pouco menor[7] do que o de várias outras empresas e ainda melhor que o teclado,[2] sendo soberbamente sensível e suave[2][4] e tendo dois botões separados, diferente de muitos designs atuais de outras empresas.[1] Além disto, tem total suporte a multitouch.[11][2][4]
Apesar do contrato para uso do Windows 7 Starter permitir até 250GB de memória no disco rígido, a Samsung decidiu manter o N150 com um disco de 160GB para tentar manter o preço baixo.[1] Isto é desapontante, já que o preço final do netbook acaba sendo bem similar ao que várias companhias estão oferecendo por netbooks de 250GB de disco rígido.[1] Outra característica desapontante quanto ao armazenamento é o slot de cartão de memória três-em-um[2] não permitir que um cartão SD seja completamente introduzido, deixando de fora uma parte que acaba tornando-se um grave incômodo.[1]
Os alto-falantes, como era de se esperar, são medíocres.[2] O som é provido pelo SRS TruSound XT.[11]
Tela e webcam[editar | editar código-fonte]
Sua tela e webcam são simples, mas funcionais.[2] A resolução nativa é o bastante para a maior parte dos casos, mas os usuários podem precisar empurrar a barra de tarefas do Windows para o canto direito ou habilitar o recurso de auto-ocultação quando for utilizar aplicações que são altas demais para caber nos 600 pixels de altura.[4] Porém, pode ser estendida para 1024x768 pixels com o auxílio de alguns softwares OEM incluídos, permitindo uma flexibilidade maior do que a que sua resolução nativa de 1024x600 pixels disponibiliza.[2] Isto é possível com o uso do Samsung Easy Resolution ou do Intel Display Driver, mas a tela fica com aspecto espremido.[5]
A tela é um de seus melhores recursos: a maioria das empresas têm empregado telas brilhantes em seus modelos, a fim de ressaltar o brilho e a cor provenientes delas.[1] Isto, porém, dificulta muito sua utilização em espaços externos.[1] A Samsung, entretanto, optou por recobrir a tela com um revestimento anti-reflexo, permitindo sua utilização em espaços externos[4][5] e em espaços internos com má-iluminação.[1] Por outro lado, a tela sofre distorções quando as costas da metade onde a tela encontra-se é levemente pressionada, o que faz a máquina parecer frágil.[2] Também, sua moldura brilhante distrai quando há reflexão.[5]
A webcam é acompanhada de um software ótimo para colocar imagens da qualidade de clipart nos vídeos caseiros, mas isso é tudo. A imagem é razoavelmente clara, mas entretanto sofre com brancos muito brilhantes.[2] O desnecessário adesivo "Digital Livecam" próximo à webcam é um equívoco.[5]

É um netbook que oferece uma experiência frustrante no começo, com muito software pré-instalados que mostram pop-ups incômodas que requerem intervenção para fazê-las parar de aparecer.[5] Enquanto o usuário tenta acessar uma webpage or está no meio da digitação de um documento do Word, ficam aparecendo lembretes e notificações dos programas McAfee Antivirus, do Samsung Update Plus, do Samsung Recovery e do Samsung FailSafe.[5] Assim, é necessário ativar ou desinstalar o McAfee Antivirus, ativar ou clicar em "no thanks" no teste de 30 dias do Samsung FailSafe, que permite rastrear e possivelmente recuperar o netbook se perdido ou roubado, e configurar o Samsung Update Plus para atualizar automaticamente ou nunca atualizar.[5] Até porquê o software pré-instalado pode deixar o sistema mais lento, o que seria frustrante.[5]

Samsung's N150 netbook is designed to be the most affordable of their models. It is geared more towards consumers than their other models. This means it lacks some of the more advanced features such as an anti-slip texture of the more expensive N310 model. Even without this, the N150 has one of the better overall better build qualities found on the market and this might explain its slightly more expensive $330 price tag. The Samsung N150 is powered by the same Intel Atom N450 mobile processor that is so prevalent through the netbook market. There isn't really any major performance increases over previous generation of Atom processors as it was much more focused on power efficiency. It will work just fine for basic productivity, media streaming and internet applications but multitasking is definitely not something to consider without upgrading the memory from the 1GB limited by the OS license. Most Windows 7 Starter based netbooks have moved to the larger 250GB hard drive allowed by its license but Samsung has decided to keep the N150 with a smaller 160GB to try and keep costs down. This is disappointing because the base price of the netbook ends up being similar to what many companies are offering with 250GB drives. Another disappointing aspect of the storage is that the media card slot does not allow an SD card to fully slide into the slot leaving it sticking out the side which is a major annoyance. While the storage features may be somewhat annoying, the display is one of the best overall features. Most companies have been using glossy coatings on their netbook displays because they let more color and brightness come from the display. The downside is that they are very difficult to use outdoors. Samsung has elected to use a display featuring an anti-glare coating that allows it to be used outdoors or in difficult indoor lighting. It uses the typical Intel GMA 3150 integrated graphics that lack the performance for streaming HD video or any sort of 3D gaming. Powering the Samsung N150 is a six-cell battery pack with a 4400mA rating. This is smaller than the large packs in some of the class leading netbooks for running time but it does have a more compact and flush design that gives it a very slim profile and lighter weight. In my video streaming playback tests, the system was able to run for roughly four and three quarter hours. This should translate to about six hours or more typical usage and is quite decent. The keyboard and trackpad design of the N150 retains much of the same layout and design of Samsung's previous designs. The isolated key design is comfortable to work with and they keyboard layout is quite good. It would be nice to see a bit more spacing between the keys but it works. The trackpad is a bit smaller than many other companies but it is responsive and has two separate buttons unlike many new integrated designs. The Webcam ships with some great software for putting Clipart-quality images into your home movies, but that's about it. The picture is reasonably clear but suffers from too-bright whites throughout. It should come as no surprise that the speakers are mediocre.

From the flex in its Chiclet-style keyboard to screen distortions when you press lightly on the glossy black back of the backlit LCD, the machine feels fragile. Still, its Atom N450 CPU chugs along, delivering 6.25 hours of life on a single battery charge--not great, but reasonable. [...] Which isn't bad for a netbook priced at $350 (as of April 22, 2010). The N150's Intel Atom N450 runs at 1.66GHz, and is bolstered by integrated Intel GMA 3150, [...] a 160GB hard drive, a 1024-by-600-resolution screen, and 802.11b/g/n support, [...] a three-in-one memory card slot[...]. As the specs indicate, this netbook is totally typical. The N150 just doesn't surprise in performance, either. Typing a Word document while listening to music on iTunes is hunky-dory; trying the same feat with a few browser windows open adds a few seconds of meditation time to every switch from one window to another. The resolution can be shifted to a stretched-out 1024 by 768 pixels with the help of some of the included OEM software, giving the N150 a little more flexibility than its native resolution of 1024 by 600 pixels provides.

The Samsung N150 is among the first netbooks to use the new Intel Atom N450 chip. [...] it runs at 1.66GHz[...]. It runs Windows 7 Starter edition and it’s perfect for Web browsing, word processing and even for watching standard definition videos. However, it’s a netbook that also delivers a frustrating user experience from the start, and in our opinion there is too much pre-loaded software that display annoying pop-ups that require user intervention in order to stop them appearing. The reminders and notifications from McAfee Antivirus, Samsung Update Plus, Samsung Recovery, and Samsung FailSafe software pop up while you’re trying to access a Web page to load or when you’re in the middle of writing a Word document. You have to either activate the McAfee Antivirus software or uninstall it. Samsung FailSafe software can be used to track and possibly retrieve the netbook if it’s ever lost or stolen, but it’s a 30-day trial so you can either activate it or click ‘no thanks’ to stop the reminders from popping up. Samsung Update Plus can be configured to check and install updates automatically, or you can tell it to never check for updates. [...] Additionally, the pre-installed software can slow down the system’s performance, which can become frustrating. As it only has a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 CPU and 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM, multitasking isn’t one of the netbook’s strong points; it performs at its best when performing only one task. [...] It recorded a time of 6min 52sec in the Blender 3D rendering test[...]. Its time of 8min 03sec in the iTunes MP3 encoding test is just about average for a netbook. A 250GB hard drive is installed [...]. The graphics performance of the N150 is dependant upon the integrated graphics controller in the Intel Atom N450 CPU and it’s not fast. You won’t be able to play anything but the simplest of games on the Samsung N150 (games that don’t use complex graphics for example), and even Flash-based games may run sluggishly on it. Either way, the 1024x600 resolution of the screen isn’t high enough to display most games anyway. There is a Samsung utility called Easy Resolution that can be used to bump up the resolution to 1024x768 (you can do the same thing from the Intel Display Driver properties), but it makes the screen look squished. Standard definition Xvid-encoded videos will play smoothly, but anything higher than standard definition will put too much stress on the system. [...] In particular, the screen could look better. It has a matte finish, which we love as it means lights won’t be reflected off it, but at the same time there is a glossy strip that frames the screen and becomes distracting when the light reflects off it. Another quibble relates to the unnecessary label that reads ‘Digital Livecam’ next to the webcam. [...] Along the edges of the Samsung N150 you get three USB 2.0 ports, [...] 10/100 Ethernet and an SD card slot. [...] However, one of the USB ports is of the ChargeableUSB type, which means that you can charge USB-based devices such as phones and MP3 players while the netbook is not even switched on.

The NC10, Samsung's first netbook computer, impressed us because it had a longer battery life and better keyboard than others on the market at the time of its release. The N150 is one of many follow-ups, with a new Intel Atom processor that uses less power than the older version, so its battery should last even longer between charges. This is the only major advantage of the updated processor. It has the same performance as the older model and so it does not make any noticeable difference in use. But it increases the N150's battery life beyond what Samsung achieved with the NC10.
