Revendo o progresso da Batalha de Guadalcanal e da Batalha de Buna-Gona em dezembro de 1942, os japoneses concluíram que nenhuma delas poderia ser cumprida. A Batalha do Mar de Bismarck (de 2 a 4 de março de 1943) foi uma ação militar que teve lugar no sudoeste do Oceano Pacífico durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Aeronaves da Quinta Força Aérea das USAAF e RAAF atacaram um navio de transporte japonês que carregava tropas para Lae, Nova Guiné (atual Papua-Nova Guiné). A maior parte da força-tarefa foi destruída e a perda de soldados japoneses foi significante.
A aquisição do comboio japonês foi decidida pelo Quartel-General Imperial que previa reforçar a sua Frente no Sudoeste do Pacífico. Foi então executado um plano de movimentação de cerca de 6 900 soldados desde Rabaul diretamente para Lae. A missão era bastante arriscada tendo em conta a supremacia aérea das forças aliadas. Porém foi efectuada, pois contrário as tropas japonesas estariam forçadas a marchar sobre os inóspitos pantanais, montanhas e terras florestais, desprovidas de estradas. Em 28 de fevereiro de 1943, o comboio de carga - constituído por oito contratropedeiros, oito navios de transporte de tropas com um escolta de aproximadamente uma centena de caças - partiu de Simpson Harbour em Rabaul.
Entretanto, os Aliados detectaram os preparos sobre a escolta organizada pelas forças japonesas, e com o sistema de criptoanálise naval em Melbourne (FRUMEL) e Washington D. C., descodificaram as mensagens cifradas verificando o destino previsto e a data de chegada das embarcações. A South West Pacific Area (SWPA) tinha desenvolvido novas técnicas militares, e planearam um ataque aéreo sobre os navios japoneses. As forças aliadas detectaram e sobrevoaram a escolta atacante, a qual ficou sob assalto aéreo prolongado de 2 a 3 de março de 1943. O seguimento de ataques foi realizado por patrulha de barcos torpedeiros americana a 4 de março. Todos os oito navios de transporte e quatro dos contratropedeiros foram destruídos e afundados. Dos mais de 6 900 soldados imprescindíveis na Nova Guiné, apenas cerca de 1200 chegaram a Lae. Outros 2 700 soldados foram resgatados pelos restante contratropedeiros e submarinos, e regressaram a Rabaul. A partir de então, os japoneses não realizaram subsequentes tentativas para reforçar a frente em Lae por meio marítimo, o que dificultou em muito os esforços de última instância, que foram mal sucedidos na detenção das ofensivas aliadas na Nova Guiné.
Antecedentes
A 23 de dezembro de 1942, o Alto Comando japonês decidiu transferir 105 mil soldados japoneses da China e do Japão para Lae como reforço para o esperado ataque ofensivo dos Aliados. Isso permitiria a retirada e evacuação de Guadalcanal, que seria solicitada na próxima semana.[1][2] Transferir tamanha força era uma tarefa complicada para a capacidade de transporte do Japão, contudo o Alto Comando considerou uma necessidade militar inevitável. No final de fevereiro de 1943, duas divisões, as 20 e 41, tinham sido transportadas para Wewak, também na Nova Guiné.
A terceira divisão, a 51, foi transportado para Rabaul entre dezembro de 1942 e janeiro de 1943, com o propósito de reforçar as tropas em Guadalcanal, porém, após a retirada do mesmo na operação Ke, foi decidido que a terceira divisão deveria dirigir-se para Lae. A missão era bastante arriscada tendo em conta a supremacia aérea dos Aliados na área.
Em 28 de fevereiro, o navio de carga foi organizado, composto por oito contratorpedeiros e oito transportes de tropas, com apoio aéreo de cerca de uma centena de aviões com base em Rabaul. O comandante da 51ª Divisão, o Tenente-General Hidemitsu Nakano navegou a bordo do contratorpedeiro Yukikaze, enquanto o Almirante Masatomi Kimura, que comandava o Terceiro Esquadrão de Contratorpedeiros, encontrava-se no Shirayuki.
As forças aliadas, sob o comando do general George Kenney, com sede em Nova Guiné, tinha-se preparado para esta eventualidade. Tripulações de B-25 Mitchell da USAAF e Bristol Beaufighter da RAAF tinham praticado ataques anti-navio, criando uma nova técnica chamada bombardeio Bounce, similar a um ataque de torpedo convencional, mas lançando bombas que depois de vários ressaltos na superfície da água explodiam sobre o alvo, de baixo do mesmo ou no seu interior, graças a um atraso fuze 4 ou 5 segundos.[3] Não se tratava de Bomba de rebote especialmente projetadas, mas de simples bombas convencionais.
Ofensiva dos aliados
Seis meses após o Japão imperial atacar Pearl Harbor em dezembro de 1941, os Estados Unidos obtiveram uma importante e decisiva vitória na Batalha de Midway. Aproveitando-se de uma iniciativa estratégica, os Estados Unidos e os seus aliados desembarcaram em Guadalcanal no sul das Ilhas Salomão, em agosto de 1942, dando início à Campanha nas Ilhas Salomão. A Batalha de Guadalcanal terminou em vitória para os aliados com a retirada das forças japonesas da ilha em inícios de fevereiro de 1943. Enquanto isso, as forças australianas e norte-americanas na Nova Guiné repeliram a ofensiva terrestre japonesa para a costa norte ao longo de Kokoda Track. Avançando sobre a ofensiva, as forças aliadas tomaram Buna-Gona, derrotando as forças japonesas em toda a região.[4][5]
Os planos dos aliados para a contra-ofensiva na Nova Guiné e Ilhas Salomão consistiu na capturar da principal base japonesa em Rabaul, na Nova Bretanha, operação esta coligida como Operação Cartwheel, lavando o caminho para uma eventual reconquista das Filipinas. Reconhecendo a ameaça, os japoneses continuaram a solicitar reforços terrestres, aéreos e navais para a região, numa tentativa de controlar o avanço dos aliados.[6]
Plano japonês
Revendo o progresso da Batalha de Guadalcanal e da Batalha de Buna-Gona em dezembro de 1942, os japoneses concluíram que nenhuma delas poderia ser cumprida. Assim, o Quartel-General Imperial optou por tomar medidas para reforçar a frente japonesa no Sudoeste do Pacífico ao enviar a 20ª Divisão comandada pelo tenente-general Jusei Aoki, da Coreia para Guadalcanal e a 41ª Divisão do tenente-general Heisuke Abe da China para Rabaul.[7] O tenente-general Hitoshi Imamura, comandante da 8ª Região Militar em Rabaul, ordenou que o XVIII Exército do tenente-general Hatazō Adachi salvaguardasse Madang, Wewak e Tuluvu na Nova Guiné. A 29 de novembro, Adachi ordenou que o 102º Regimento de Infantaria e outras unidades sob o comando do major-general Toru Okabe - comandante do grupo de infantaria da 51ª Divisão - fossem movimentadas de Rabaul para Lae, conquistando território para tomar Wau.[8] Após a evacuação de Guadalcanal a 4 de janeiro de 1943,[9] os japoneses garantiram os seus esforços na Papua-Nova Guiné, e enviaram as 20ª e 41ª Divisões para Wewak.[7]
