Começou a carreira literária em 1920, com This Side of Paradise (Este Lado do Paraíso), romance que lhe deu grande popularidade e lhe abriu espaço em publicações de grande prestígio, como a Scribner's e o The Saturday Evening Post. Seu segundo romance, The Beautiful and Damned (Belos e Malditos), foi publicado em 1922. |

|||

Em 1939 começou a escrever seu último romance, The Love of the Last Tycoon (O Último Magnate), publicado postumamente em 1941.
