Programa de Contrainteligência

COINTELPRO (Programa de Contra Inteligência, acrónimo da denominação em inglês Counter Intelligence Program).

Constituído por uma enorme série de operações ilegais e clandestinas conduzidas pelo FBI - a Polícia Federal Americana - (Federal Bureau of Investigations, em Inglês), entre os anos de 1956 até após 1971, que tinham por objetivo desestabilizar grupos de protestos, de esquerda, ativistas e dissidentes políticos dentro dos Estados Unidos.

Dentre as atividades ilegais realizadas pelo FBI estavam interceptação de correspondência e comunicações, incêndios provocados e assassinatos. COINTELPRO constituiu-se como um terrorismo de Estado conduzido em nome da "Segurança Nacional".

As diretrizes dadas pelo Diretor do FBI J. Edgar Hoover, eram de que os agentes do FBI tinham a missão "expor", "enganar", "provocar desentendimentos", "destruir a credibilidade", como também "neutralizar" as atividades e os líderes de quaisquer movimentos que ele listasse como ameaças a segurança nacional Americana.

Martin Luther King Jr. foi uma das vítimas do COINTELPRO.
