Apelidos honorários na música popular são geralmente nomes religiosos, familiares ou (mais frequentemente) reais e aristocráticos em natureza, e são usados como uma forma de expressão na mídia, ou para identificar a importância de um artista para seus fãs. Os apelidos honoríficos foram usados na música clássica na Europa já no início do século XIX, com figuras como Mozart sendo chamado de "O pai da música moderna" e Bach "O pai da música moderna do piano". Eles também foram particularmente proeminentes na cultura afro-americana na era pós-Guerra civil, talvez como um meio de conferir status que tinha sido negado pela escravidão nos Estados Unidos, e em conseqüência incorporou a música do jazz e do blues, incluindo figuras como Duke Ellington e Count Basie.
