O Oscar de melhor atriz é um prêmio oferecido pela Academia de Artes e Ciências Cinematográficas às atrizes que trabalham na indústria cinematográfica e são consideradas as melhores de cada ano. As indicações são feitas pelos atores e atrizes membros da Academia.

Em 1933 não houve entrega dos prêmios Oscar, que foram entregues duas vezes em 1930 (em abril, referente aos filmes produzidos entre 2 de agosto de 1928 e 31 de julho de 1929, e em novembro, referente aos filmes produzidos entre 1 de agosto de 1929 e 31 de julho de 1930); em 1931 (em novembro, referente aos filmes produzidos entre 1 de agosto de 1930 e 31 de julho de 1931); em 1932 (em novembro, referente aos filmes produzidos entre 1 de agosto de 1931 e 31 de julho de 1932); e em 1934 (em março, referente aos filmes produzidos entre 1 de agosto de 1932 e 31 de dezembro de 1933).

A indicada mais jovem é Quvenzhané Wallis, que tem 9 anos, e foi nomeada pelo papel em Beasts of the Southern Wild, em 2013. A vencedora mais jovem foi Marlee Matlin, que tinha 21 anos quando ganhou pelo papel em Children of a Lesser God. A indicada mais velha é Emmanuelle Riva, que foi indicada pelo filme "Amour" (2012) aos 85 anos. A vencedora mais velha foi a atriz Jessica Tandy, que tinha 80 anos de idade quando ganhou por Driving Miss Daisy, em 1990.

Katharine Hepburn é a atriz que ganhou mais Oscars, com quatro vitórias. Doze atrizes venceram pelo menos duas vezes. Em ordem cronológica são: Luise Rainer, Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland, Vivien Leigh, Ingrid Bergman, Elizabeth Taylor, Glenda Jackson, Jane Fonda, Sally Field, Jodie Foster, Hilary Swank e Meryl Streep. Meryl Streep e Ingrid Bergman ganharam ainda uma estatueta de Melhor Atriz Coadjuvante, cada uma.

A primeira não-americana a ganhar o prêmio foi a canadense Mary Pickford, em 1930. A única atriz brasileira indicada ao Oscar foi Fernanda Montenegro, em 1999, por Central do Brasil, de Walter Salles, mas acabou perdendo para Gwyneth Paltrow, por Shakespeare Apaixonado.

Meryl Streep é mais indicada, com quatorze nomeações, e outras três como melhor atriz coadjuvante.

Ocorreu apenas um empate nessa categoria. Isto aconteceu em 1969, quando Katharine Hepburn e Barbra Streisand receberam o mesmo prêmio, uma vez que obtiveram exatamente o mesmo número de votos.

A primeira e única mulher negra a ganhar o Oscar de melhor atriz foi Halle Berry, em 2002, pelo seu papel em Monster's Ball.
